* Bonus Tracks Not In Film

'Peter's Friends' is what people sometimes refer to as 'a personal film'. Not that it is somehow an extension of my own life. It is the realisation of a fine original screenplay by Rita Rudner and Martin Bergman. But, it does feature characters and situations a little closer to my own experience than in my two previous films—a noir thriller about reincarnation and a Shakespearean History Play.

The 'Personal' element in Peter's Friends was never more true than in the choice of music. This film is about a very particular group of people. But I wanted their choice of music, (and therefore the music that we used in the film) to have the same evocative, emotive feeling for many people across age barriers and social groups.

That the songs should be immensely popular then, was integral to the whole movie. It was a great relief therefore to be blessed with the co-operation of these major artists. They were already implicitly part of the film. Their influence and popularity across the 80's helped their music to mark key moments in that turbulent decade with great potency.

Perhaps, indeed, the best way to see the movie or hear the soundtrack is with a group of friends to whom you can turn and say "Do you remember where we were when we first heard 'Hungry Heart' or 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World'?" All the tracks have great immediacy but also share a directness and simplicity in their lyrics.

Queen's 'You're My Best Friend' describes very touchingly the mood of the movie and its celebration of friendship.

Tears For Fears offer something of an anthem for those (like Peter's Friends at the beginning of the movie) who are about to begin the great adventure of their 20's.

The wit and fun of Cyndi Lauper and Nina Simone made them natural choices.

These are numbers that make you smile each time you hear them.

Any group of friends across any decade will contend with the perils and the miracles of love.

Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner and The Pretenders all offer very gutsy views on that situation.

For those reflective times amongst friends in, let's face it, a difficult decade, there's the sweet melancholy of Eric Clapton, Michael Nesmith and, in a terrific new recording of 'Let's Stay Together', The Pasadenas.

Daryl Braithwaite's stirring 'As The Days Go By' wraps up the whole story in more ways than one.

Additionally on this album we have the luxury of music that does not appear in the movie but most definitely represents yet more of the varied musical tastes of 'Peter's Friends'. From the mature Elton John and Paul Young to some of the 80's emergent artists, Terence Trent D'Arby, Prefab Sprout and Deacon Blue.

This is a movie unashamedly about love and friendship. The music is integral to that and the film simply wouldn't work without it. I'm profoundly grateful therefore to all the artists who contributed so generously, to everyone at Sony who made it happen, and to all the actors and technicians who so brilliantly, warmly, and yes, dare I say it, with great heart, embodied the spirit of the script and the music.

I hope you enjoy it.

  1. Peter's Friends is a 1992 British comedy film directed and produced by Kenneth Branagh, and written by Rita Rudner and Martin Bergman.

The film follows six friends (played by Stephen Fry, Branagh, Alphonsia Emmanuel, Hugh Laurie, Imelda Staunton and Emma Thompson), members of an acting troupe who graduated from Cambridge University in 1982 and went their separate ways. Ten years later, Peter inherits a large estate from his father and invites the group to spend the New Year's holiday with him.

The soundtrack featured many artists from the 1980s, including Tears for Fears (whose song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was heard over the opening credits of the film), Eric Clapton, The Pretenders, Daryl Braithwaite, Kiri Te Kanawa and Bruce Springsteen.

The soundtrack album did not, however, feature the cast's rendition of the Jerome Kern standard "The Way You Look Tonight", as performed in the film nor the song, "Orpheus on the Underground", by John Hudson, which features at the beginning and end of the film.
